NEWS

WE WELCOME GAIL ANDERSON TO THE HEALTH AND WELLNESS TEAM

Fitness is my passion.

I began my aerobics career in 1995 when I first became certified as a Step Aerobics Instructor. Shortly after coming on board at Morehouse School Of Medicine, I began instructing aerobics classes in one of the Labs of the Gloster Building. As time passed I wanted to be more flexible with my aerobics routines so I studied and became certified in Taerobics® which is a form of Kickboxing Aerobics.

I later began to learn the benefits of Weight Training and became certified in Body Pump (Light to Moderate Weight Lifting) and a Certified Personal Trainer.

I love working and sharing my gift with anyone who will give me a small piece of their time.

I am pleased to announce that fitness instructor Maria Grant-Barnes is working in partnership with the Morehouse School of Medicine Health and Wellness Initiative.

Maria brings a wealth of knowledge in the field of Fitness. Maria will assist us with our "Less is More" contest and teach strength training, Nutrition and Cardio classes.

MASSAGE THERAPY- Deborah Hampton

D’Magic Touch Massage Therapy
Workplace Stress = Massage Therapy:
One of the main contributions to our everyday stress is our workplace. With deadlines due, the rapid increase of technology and interpersonal conflict are just a few stresses employees cope with on a daily basis. Without time to relax, stress is cumulative and causes neck pain, back pain, poor circulation, eyestrain, and backaches. Repetitive use causes injuries such as tendonitis or carpal tunnel syndrome. Stress can cause poor blood pressure, irritability and anger, ulcers and heart disease, poor concentration and listlessness. It lowers resistance to colds and infections. Physical and emotional exhaustion, well known as "Burn-out", can occur.
A relaxing therapeutic massage from a trained professional has been known to help increase body awareness. It involves the manipulation of the soft tissue structures of the body and a natural, relaxing and enjoyable way to relieve joint and muscle soreness and/or pain, release toxins, muscle spasm, discomfort and reduce stress. It does not claim to cure pre-existing physical illness or disease, but rather to promote general health and well being. The basic goal of massage therapy is to help the body heal itself and to increase health. It also helps them to think quickly and more clearly. Not only does massage help a person to relax, it very much can be and often is a positive life moving experience.
As a long time employee in the Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine I have become increasingly aware of the need to support and empower people to actively participate in creating healthy lives and environments. This led me to explore complimentary therapeutic strategies and receive my degree in Massage Therapy.

During my training I received over 850 hours of instruction in the areas such as Swedish, Neuromuscular, Hydrotherapy, Reflexology, and Shiatsu massage and am currently licensed in the state of Georgia.

I truly believe in the benefits of massage therapy in creating physical, mental, and spiritual well being and balance between mind and body. My mission is to utilize my therapeutic techniques to carefully assess individual needs and deliver caring, confidential and compassionate care.
